i've been hearing people talking about gary v these days. is it because of his concert? sabi ni porqi maganda daw! :)

one of the first artists i admired back when i was still small was gary v. there was simply something powerful in his tenor voice that caught my attention.

i remember that we were in grade 3 then when we sang his song, 'Di Bale Na Lang for a school activity. for the rest of my grade school days, i would look forward to his other albums--tapes were the way to go back then. i particularly enjoyed his concert albums, Move and Shout, respectively. i would play them as we went to school. i would play them again when we went home from school. i think my siblings were at their highest tolerance then. those were my days in high school. hehehehe. :)

cds eventually become more and more popular. they were priced at P375 each. do you remember those days? i recall saving up for the two disc Best of Gary V set. these remain to be me among my favorite cds until now, many years after i had bought them.

when i first taught philosophy in Ateneo de Davao after i graduated in 2000, one of the challenges i had to face was how to bring down what i understood from Fr. Ferriols' many classes and teach them in ways that would relate to students' experiences.

as i tackled marcel's texts in my philo of religion class, we discussed the film La Strada (The Road)--a film which probably several of you know of. anyway, since intersubjectivity was the theme of the discussion, what better way to get students' attention that to spice it up with--yes, you guessed it--LOVE.

because it was also a serious philosophical discourse, we tried to emphasize the difference between KITA and IKAW.... no, i will not discuss that here in the email. hehehehehehehe.

anyhow, here's Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw and Kailangan Kita... two songs that talk about the Beloved, one of which is probably stretching its gramatical artistic license. mabuhay ang wikang filipino. (huh? hahahaha.)

on an unrelated note, though, i think Kailangan Kita is a really nice song to sing to somone you wish to propose to, or at least a song worth singing on a wedding day. :)

Misty Glass Window / I Believe in Dreams

here are two more senti slow songs. :)

i think i was in first year high school during this time. back then, Magic 89.9, RX 93.1--among others--were already well-known stations. they played this acoustic song on the radio, a song i looked forward to hearing. as soon as the opening chords would play, i'd turn on the casette player, press 'record', and hope that my blank tape had enough free space on it. that's how we did it then. a blank tape had such power to compile your favorite songs.

unfortunately, i lost my copy of Misty Glass Window many years ago. i guess the Artstart song was overlapped by other popular songs as the years gone by. for all i know, among the tons of casette tapes that still remain in the corner of my old room, some gems are yet to be rediscovered...

as fate would have it though, i encountered the same song again a year or two ago, venturing through a tiangge selling pirated CDs. and there it was, one of my old favorites, in its digitized glory. i remember i was laughing so hard as i held up the pirated piece of intellectual property. the man who was selling the stuff probably thought me mad. ;)

the other old senti song we have on our playlist is by Janno Gibbs. I Believe in Dreams. for all you guitar enthusiasts out there: I dare you. ikapa n'yo yung kantang ito. bawal mag-cheating by downloading the tabs or chords from the internet. hahaha. :) the song is beautiful because the message is simple. but it is also beautiful because the music behind the words is surprisingly complex. the shift in chords and the chord patterns do not follow the usual pop song formula. oh well, just listen to it, and you may or may not agree with me. :) hehehehe.

Ikaw ang Mahal Ko / Mapansin

we return to more contemporary times this week. :)

before jimmy bondoc became famous as a solo artist, he was a member of Ateneo High's famed Dulaang Sibol. taken from the album 'Sumibol,' the track Ikaw ang Mahal Ko is a slow but sweet song one sings to one's beloved. even as it has religous overtones, the song itself speaks simply of the basic truth that one is loved... this soulful rendition makes you want to cuddle up on a cool evening and listen to crickets chirp the night away... on a personal note, songs like these help me get in touch with that simple desire we all share: "to be told that I am loved for who I am." :)

frankly, i wasn't impressed with Paolo Santos at the start of his career. all he was doing was reviving old songs that have been revived several times over by other artists. songs like 'moonlight over paris,' 'return to pooh corner,' and others, were--quite frankly--performed far better by the original artists. but what finally caught my attention was when he started releasing his own stuff, original material that was showing his more creative side. the groovy song Mapansin marks the beginning of this worthy effort.
